NORC - Aging in Place
Condos are facing a growing challenge: residents in communities that trend older are choosing to age in place because traditional options such as long-term care or retirement homes are often inadequate or unaffordable.
Aging in place creates pressures on boards, property managers and front-line staff, from physical and mental health concerns to increased demands on security and concierge teams. This educational session introduces Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) and the innovative work of the NORC Innovation Center (NIC), a UHN supported organization.
Learn how NIC has mapped demographics across Toronto, revealing that more older adults live in NORC buildings than in retirement homes and long-term care combined. Discover how NIC’s programs analyze community health needs and formalize resident-led initiatives through the Ambassador Program, which helps older adults organize activities, foster engagement, and connect with local health providers for on-site group programming.
Hear from a property manager working in a NORC community about the impact, effect and issues that aging in place create on the community, and how these issues can be addressed and ameliorated with NORC based systems.
We’ll explore:
- Why NORC programs matter for condos and community well-being
- Practical steps boards and managers can take to support aging in place (e.g., amenity space access, communication support)
- How these initiatives alleviate pressure on management and front desk staff
- The NIC model for connecting informal resident networks to formal healthcare systems, including the role of on-site “connectors” and integrated care pathways
- This introductory webinar sets the stage for a deeper dive in a later session, where we’ll explore the NIC’s Ambassador Program in detail and workshop strategies for implementation.
Who Should Attend:
- Condominium board directors
- Property managers
- Security and front desk concierge professionals
